Licensing
Licensing overview
Free for up to 10 users, perpetual licenses above that, and an offline license check.
The model
- Vaultigen is free for organizations with up to 10 users, with every feature included.
- Above 10 users you need a commercial license: Pro (perpetual, one year of updates included, renewable) or Lifetime (updates forever). See pricing.
- The source code is available under the Elastic License 2.0. It is source-available, not open source: you may not offer Vaultigen as a hosted service or bypass the license check. IT service providers may run a separate installation for each client (permission).
The free edition and a licensed installation differ in exactly two ways:
- The sidebar shows “Free edition · up to 10 users” instead of “Licensed to …”.
- No eleventh user can be added.
Evaluate before buying
Install the free edition on your own infrastructure and test every feature with up to 10 users, with no time limit. Check its features and compatibility with your environment before purchasing a commercial license. See the installation guide and refund terms.
What counts as a user
The limit applies to seats in use: every active user plus every open invitation. Deactivated users and expired or cancelled invitations do not count. The Users page shows the count.
When no seat is free, Vaultigen refuses to add a user:
- new invitations,
- accepting an older invitation,
- reactivating an account,
- creating another administrator with
vaultigen:bootstrap.
Each refusal appears in Activity as “User limit reached”.
Existing users are never deactivated or restricted because of the license. Removing a license or letting it expire only prevents additions. The first administrator can always be created, and the emergency vaultigen:recover-admin command is never limited.
No network calls
Vaultigen verifies licenses offline. A license is a signed text block, checked against public keys built into the code. There is no activation, no telemetry and no update check. Installations behind an egress firewall or without internet access work exactly the same.
One license, all installations
One license covers every installation of your organization: production, staging, test and disaster recovery. The user limit applies per organization.
Where the license state is shown
- Sidebar, for every user: “Free edition · up to 10 users”, “Licensed to …”, or “License does not cover this version”. Clicking it opens a short explanation.
- System → License: state, license details, seats in use, and links to buy or manage a license.
- Installation status: a License check that warns when the license is invalid or does not cover the running version.
Next: Installing a license.
